Helping Community Dogs During Hot Weather

Simple, practical steps can help dogs cope with hot days while keeping their surroundings safe.

Provide water where appropriate

Offer clean water in a stable bowl in a safe place where it does not block a walkway or create a traffic hazard. Refresh it regularly and keep the bowl clean.

Look for signs of distress

Heavy panting, weakness, confusion, vomiting or collapse can indicate a serious problem. Move to a safer, cooler area only if it is safe to do so and contact a veterinarian promptly.

Never force a dog into contact

A frightened or overheated dog may not tolerate handling. Give it space and seek experienced help rather than trying to restrain it.

Avoid dangerous shortcuts

Do not leave animals inside parked vehicles, and do not apply human medicines or home remedies without veterinary advice.

Work with the neighbourhood

Coordinate water points responsibly and keep locations clean. During extreme weather, check local advisories and contact animal-welfare groups if you see an animal in distress.

Remember

Shade, water, observation and timely veterinary help are useful—but severe symptoms need urgent professional attention.
