How Everyone Can Help Feed Neighbourhood Dogs Responsibly
Small, consistent acts can help community dogs—when food, hygiene and local rules are considered.
Start with a simple routine
If feeding is permitted at the location, choose a consistent time and a suitable designated spot. Avoid creating a crowd or encouraging dogs to gather near busy roads.
Offer appropriate food and water
Use food suitable for dogs and provide clean water in a stable bowl. Do not give toxic foods such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions or garlic, and avoid cooked bones. If a dog has special medical needs, ask a veterinarian about diet.
Leave the area clean
Serve reasonable portions, remove uneaten food and packaging, and keep entrances, pavements and roads clear. Good hygiene helps avoid conflict with neighbours and reduces pests.
Coordinate with neighbours
Communicate respectfully with residents, shopkeepers and local authorities. If concerns arise, look for a safe and lawful designated feeding location rather than arguing or feeding in a place that creates a hazard.
Check the rules first
Feeding rules and court directions can be location-specific and may change. Consult the latest Animal Welfare Board of India guidance, applicable court orders and municipal instructions before deciding where to feed.
Responsible feeding is about the animal's welfare, public safety, cleanliness and compliance with current local directions.
