Adopt, Don't Shop: Preparing to Welcome a Dog Home
Adoption is a long-term commitment. Thoughtful preparation helps people and dogs settle in together.
Think beyond the first day
A dog needs time, routine, food, veterinary care, exercise and patient companionship. Consider your housing, work schedule, budget and who will be responsible for daily care.
Choose a good match
Age, size, energy level, health and temperament all matter. Ask the rescue or current caregiver about the dog's known needs and allow time for a careful introduction.
Prepare a safe space
Arrange water, suitable food, a resting place, secure doors and a well-fitted collar or harness. Keep toxic foods, medicines and cleaning products out of reach.
Plan veterinary care
Arrange a veterinary check and discuss vaccination, parasite prevention, sterilisation and any known medical needs. Keep records and follow the veterinarian's advice.
Be patient during adjustment
A newly adopted dog may be anxious or need time to learn household routines. Use reward-based training, avoid punishment and seek qualified help if you struggle.
Adoption is not a trend or a gift to give impulsively. It is a promise to care for an animal throughout its life.
